Foord Ave Regeneration Site

The Foord Ave site, next to the Cooks River in Hurlstone Park is an inspiring testament to what can be achieved when a determined environmental group combines with nature and the local Council. The Foord Ave site has been transformed from grass & weed to a beautiful native vegetation site in less than 4 years. Congratulations to the Mudcrabs and in particular Liz Millen & Doug Benson

SWIMMING IN THE COOKS RIVER SOME TIME SOON? See this extract from Marrickville Council’s Community Strategic Plan for 2021
“In 2021, Marrickville’s environment is healthy. Children can swim in the river and play in the dirt, and native plants and animals, including frogs, bees and ants, are thriving…”
Thanks to CRVA President, John Butcher, for bringing this proposal to set up a swimming site to Council’s Cooks River Committee. And to Marrickville Council for getting behind this inspirational goal.

Biodiversity in the Cooks on the rise?

Gavin says:

“On Friday 7 June at 10.04am I spotted a big slow-moving school of fish proceeding along the north bank of Cooks River, right beside the rock wall and about 100 metres upstream of the Canoe… Club. Most appeared to be about 200 – 250mm long and were completely unfazed by my presence looking down on them. Probably 200+ in the school. I later IDed them as Striped Catfish [Plotosus lineatus]. I’ve never seen them in Cooks River before (in fact can’t recall ever seeing them). Sydney appears to be about the southern limit of their range on the east coast.”

Have you seen them? Let us know. [GA]

Canterbury Girls High School launches Make postcode 2193 plastic bottle free

On Friday 7/6/13 Canterbury Girls High School launched their campaign to make postcode 2193 plastic bottle free.

With help from the Sea Life Conservation Foundation, Canterbury Girls has installed a water bottle filling station.  The School’s aim is to eliminate the purchase and use of bottled water on site.  The School canteen will cease selling bottled water once the filling station is up and running.

The Cooks River Valley Association and the Mudcrabs commend Canterbury Girls HS for the action and fully support their campaign to make Postcode 2193 plastic bottle free. Year 12 student Suha gave the filling station a workout. See below.

Joseph Lee – EcoWarrior

Joseph Lee decided that there was too much litter in Cooks River. After several attempts to get Sydney Water & local Councils to take responsibility for the litter in the River & getting no action, Joseph decided that he would take action himself.

Joseph has started to remove litter from one of the worst sites on the River – the mangroves just east of Canterbury Road bridge, on the Canterbury Station side. Single-handed he has climbed down to the River’s edge & bagged and removed masses of litter.
